Twitter has begun testing an edit button

After years of user requests, the social media network is now testing a tweet-editing capability.

Twitter has begun testing an edit button

Twitter revealed in a tweet that it is internally testing an edit function that would allow users to amend tweets for up to 30 minutes after they are published.

In a blog post, the business wrote, "Think of it as a limited amount of time to perform things like repair typos, add missing tags, and more."

Edited tweets, a feature that has long been on users' wish lists, will follow Facebook's lead and display an emblem, timestamp, and label to indicate that original tweets have been modified.

"We hope that the availability of Edit Tweet will make tweeting feel more approachable and less stressful," Twitter wrote in a blog post. "You should be able to join in the conversation in a way that makes sense to you, and we'll continue to work on methods to make that seem simple."

Initially, only Twitter Blue subscribers will have access to the Edit feature.

Twitter wants to expand Edit Tweet access to Twitter Blue subscribers, which is now undergoing internal testing to detect and fix possible concerns.

As part of their subscription and continuing testing, users of the opt-in paid monthly membership will gain early access to the functionality.

"At start, the test will be limited to a single nation, and it will be expanded as we learn and monitor how people use Edit Tweet," Twitter wrote in a blog post. "We'll also be watching how the functionality affects how people read, create, and interact with tweets."

Concerns Regarding Misuse

Concerns about abuse are one of the reasons Twitter has been so hesitant to introduce an edit tool. People, for example, might alter a viral tweet after it has been retweeted thousands of times to insert spam, disinformation, or abuse.

Twitter expects that its 30-minute edit time limit and version history will prevent such misuse and "help maintain the integrity of the dialogue and establish a publicly available record of what was said."

The Edit Function Will Assist in Maintaining Post Momentum

Without deleting and reposting, social media professionals and personalities may utilize the edit tool to rectify errors and add hashtags to published (and possibly liked and shared) tweets.
